On this Teacher Appreciation Day 2012, just as the old bumper sticker says, “If you can read this, thank a teacher”. Here are a few quotes about the wonderfully underrated profession of teaching.

XTREME POST OFFICES VANUATU STYLE

Want adventure and/or danger to be found in every aspect of your life? Well, I have just the activity for you – mail a postcard. The catch is that you must travel to the islands of Vanuatu to do it. It is there that tourists can mail a postcard in a post office perched on the rim of a very active volcano located along the Pacific “Ring Of Fire”. Vanuatu also has the first underwater post office. Located off Hideaway Island, also in the Vanuatu chain of islands, is a staffed post office located three meters underwater. ISAAC SALAZAR’S CREATIVE BOOK ART

Don’t judge American artist Isaac Salazar’s work by its cover! This creative thinker from New Mexico works full time as an accountant and was looking for a hobby. He started recycling old books and turning them into works of art. Never having had an art class, it wasn’t until recently that Salazar would even accept the word “artist” as part of his title. He enjoys the idea of the books not ending up in the landfill. AND YET ANOTHER USE FOR SOCIAL MEDIA THANKS TO COLLECTOR’S EDITION

It could be said that this start-ups newest product is really cleaning up. Collector’s Edition, an entertainment start-up, last month released Sh*tter. Customers can order 4 rolls of toilet paper that has their Twitter feed printed directly on the rolls. The product was introduced at the end of March and has already sold out of their first batch of printing. Collector’s Edition readily admits that the way to wealth is not in custom printing toilet paper, but they have a different goal in mind. SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES AT THE POSEIDON UNDERSEA RESORT

Ordinarily sleeping with the fishes is something you want to AVOID doing! In this case, however, it looks like you will leave with a lasting memory. The Poseidon Undersea Resort is a five star exclusive resort in Fiji. The $30,000 a week package includes staying in an underwater suite (40 feet underwater) for two nights and four nights in an over-water villa or beach villa. Guests are transported 40 feet down by an underwater elevator to one of 24 underwater suites. There is also an underwater restaurant. The 222 acre Poseidon Mystery Island was scheduled to open in 2009, then in 2010 and is now rumored to be opening in late 2012. WONDER CAPES – SPECIAL POWERS OF COURAGE AND HOPE INCLUDED

Superheroes don’t always need capes. This one just sews them for others. Amy Pankratz is a stay at home mom of three from South Dakota. At the end of each busy day, Amy spends her evening sewing for others – children fighting childhood diseases. Amy’s daughter Isabella was hospitalized when she was four. She took her pink, princess superhero cape her mother had fashioned for her to the hospital. The reaction from the other children in the hospital was amazing. Isabella let them try on the cape and they began running, laughing and feeling “superhuman” powers just from putting it on. Amy recognized the strength it gave the young patients and began sewing capes for hospitalized children. To date, she has sewn over 4,000 capes. Not only does this provide strength and hope to the children and their families, but Amy’s Wonder Capes have inspired other ideas and groups to help in the fight against childhood diseases. THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING.. BROUGHT TO YOU BY COCA COLA

ONE HUG = ONE COCA COLA! Sound far-fetched? Not to the Coca Cola Company. As part of their “Open Happiness” campaign, Coke placed one of their vending machines on the campus of University of Singapore. On the front of this machine were simply the words “Hug Me”. Consumers need only give the big ole machine a giant bear hug and a free can of soda comes out. “Our strategy is to deliver doses of happiness in an unexpected, innovative way to engage not only the people present, but the audience at large,” said Leonardo O’Grady, ASEAN IMC director, in a statement. What an awesome free gift!!!! (…. and you get a soda too).

CAINE’S ARCADE – WHERE CREATIVE IDEAS ARE THE BIG WINNER

Never have I seen a film bursting at the seams with so many creative ideas. Take one 9 year old boy who chooses not to utter the words, “I am bored”. Instead, he takes empty cardboard boxes from his dad’s business and turns them into low tech, highly imaginative arcade games. Day after day this young entrepreneur sits by his arcade without so much as a single paying customer. Enter an arcade patron who not only is his first and only paying customer, but who also envisions a short film about this young boy’s determination and his undertaking (unique subject matter for sure). The filmmaker then takes the phrase “build it and they will come” to a whole new level by setting up a surprise Flashmob Facebook Arcade Event for Cain’s Arcade. A REAL CAPED CRUSADER

Driving in Maryland, you glance over and see a black Lamborghini. Unusual sight, maybe, but it gets more amazing. You manage to take a peek at the driver and realize it is none other than the Caped Crusader, himself (kinda), Batman. Just a few differences – first, this one’s real name is Lenny B. Robinson from Baltimore County, Maryland, and he is not fighting criminals, he is fighting terrible childhood diseases. This Batman spends his time visiting sick children in hospitals and boosting their spirits. Lenny started a cleaning company as a teenager and made a success of it. This is how he chooses to spend his life now. He gives out about $25,000 worth of Batman paraphernalia and Batman books each year which he signs and gives to the young patients. As the Batmobile drives away from the hospital, Batman leaves every sick child in that hospital with not only a physical remembrance of their personal visit from Batman, but the lasting memory of someone who is fighting along side of them to end their disease!

GHOST BIKES – A QUIET REMINDER

It is amazing the many ideas people can come up with in order to effect change. Enter the GHOST BIKE. Started in 2003 in St. Louis, these bikes painted all white can now be found in over 500 locations worldwide. Each bike is a reminder of a biker who lost their life in that area. It is hoped that the presence of these memorials might remind drivers in the area to be more alert to bikers. Some of these bikes have resulted in changes in the intersections. They also serve as a reminder to the bikers of the need to be extra vigilant when sharing the streets. So the next time you go by a GHOST BIKE chained to the side of the road, hopefully you will think about all the many, many lives changed, both for the good and the bad, by that one inspirational bike.
